Goals – a great factor that helps us strive and keep on working/moving. It is important part of our lives that keeps us focused and increase our level of motivation. As a result, we achieve things that we had desired the most. Goal setting involves the development of an action plan designed to motivate and guide a person or group toward a goal
George Doran introduced in the November 1981 issue of Management Review the concept of the SMART goals that teaches us what goals should be.
Goals must be:
- Specific – goals should be focused on one, clear objective
- Measurable – it must be able to create a concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of the goal
- Achievable – set goals that are realistic and attainable
- Relevant – choose a goal that supports or aligned with your other goals
- Timely – set a time-frame of a deadline to help you focus even more on the achievement of your goal
Five Rules in Setting a Goal
1. Set a goal that keeps you motivated
why it is valuable to you
2. Set SMART goals
to make goals to be powerful, they should be designed to be SMART
3. Write your goals
writing down your goals physically makes it real and tangible
4. Make plans to achieve it
think about individual steps on how you will achieve your goal and write them down on a paper. As you complete each step, cross over it or strike-through it and you’ll realize that you are making progress towards your ultimate goal
5. Stay focused
always remember and visualize your goal every day until you reach it.
